Traditional technology companies build walled gardens. They are protective to the point of looking like monopolies and obsessively work towards owning the entire technology stack.
This approach is capital inefficient, slows down innovation, limits disruptive potential, and is short-sighted. Even though it is popular today, rent-seeking and protectionist behavior can never become a sustainable business model.
One of the most powerful ideas driving web3 adoption is that much of what is being built is structured like Lego blocks. These individual Legos are disruptive on their own. But they are an order of magnitude more disruptive when the Legos start connecting with each other. This is the concept of composability.
Instead of building the entire stack for each application, blockchain teams can leverage existing Legos to build faster, iterate cheaper, and maximize disruptive potential. Innovation booms when a large network of otherwise not connected teams start leveraging each other's work, knowledge, and experience.
Security and network experts can build the blockchain, trading and latency experts can build the decentralized exchange, and user experience and design experts can build the application, all without directly working together.
The idea of composability is only possible because blockchains provide a neutral infrastructure layer. In an ideal scenario, the Legos are built in a manner that even competitors are comfortable in leveraging each other's Legos to further the purpose of their applications.
Composability is built into the fiber of web3. To me, it is the most exciting, underappreciated, and unexplored aspect of web3.
